The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, so converting centimetres to inches is a single division. No lookup table is needed.

Formula inches = centimetres ÷ 2.54 · feet = inches ÷ 12
01

Divide by 2.54

Every centimetre value becomes inches by dividing by 2.54. 30 cm ÷ 2.54 = 11.81 in; 100 cm ÷ 2.54 = 39.37 in.

02

Split into feet when it helps

For longer lengths, divide the inches by 12. The whole number is feet and the remainder is inches: 170 cm = 66.93 in = 5 ft 6.9 in.

03

Round only at the end

Keep the full value while you work and round once. Rounding 2.54 to 2.5 makes 100 cm look like 40 in instead of 39.37 in.

Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · The definition

1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm

The 1959 international agreement fixed the inch at 2.54 cm. Dividing by 2.54 is exact; any decimals you see come from display rounding.

02 · Clothing

Waist labels round to the nearest inch

A 76 cm waist is 29.92 in and is sold as size 30. Measure yourself in centimetres and convert, rather than trusting a size chart that has already rounded.

03 · Metre check

One metre is about 39.37 inches

Use this as a sanity check: a metre is a little over three feet three inches. If your answer for 100 cm is not near 39.4, something went wrong.

04 · Opposite page

Going the other way multiplies by 2.54

This page divides by 2.54. The inches to cm page multiplies by 2.54. Mixing the two up is the most common conversion mistake.
