The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

A height written as 5 ft 7 in is one measurement in two parts. Polish the parts into a single number of inches before converting, then multiply by the exact inch factor.

Formula cm = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54 · metres = cm ÷ 100
01

Combine the two parts

Multiply the feet by 12 and add the extra inches. 5 ft 7 in becomes (5 × 12) + 7 = 67 inches. If you skip this step and convert the parts separately, rounding can creep in.

02

Multiply by 2.54

The international inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so 67 inches × 2.54 = 170.18 cm. Because the factor is exact, the only rounding is in what you choose to display.

03

Write the result as cm or m

Forms want centimetres, so 170.18 cm is the figure to copy. Divide by 100 for metres: 1.7018 m. Most Indian forms accept whole centimetres, in which case 170 cm is the rounded answer.

Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · Two boxes

Inches run from 0 to 11, not 0 to 12

The inches box stops at 11.9 because 12 inches is exactly one foot. Keeping feet and inches separate avoids the classic mistake of reading 5.7 as 5 ft 7 in when it means 5.7 feet.

02 · The exact chain

1 ft = 30.48 cm follows from the inch

The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm and there are 12 inches in a foot, so a foot is 12 × 2.54 = 30.48 cm. No rounding is involved at any step.

03 · Forms

Write centimetres, keep the inches in your head

Indian applications, medical records and school files record height in cm. Convert the full height once — 5 ft 7 in is 170.18 cm — then round only at the point of writing.

04 · Tape measures

Read one edge of the tape, not both

Many Indian tape measures print inches on one edge and centimetres on the other. Mixing the two edges on a 5 ft 7 in measurement is how people end up with a height that is off by several centimetres.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
What is 5 ft 7 in in centimetres?+
5 ft 7 in is 170.18 cm. The calculation is (5 × 12 + 7) = 67 inches, then 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm. Rounded to whole centimetres it is 170 cm.
How do I convert feet and inches to cm by hand?+
Convert the feet to inches by multiplying by 12, add the extra inches, then multiply the total by 2.54. A quicker route is feet × 30.48 plus inches × 2.54, which gives the same answer because both factors are exact.
Why is 5.5 feet not 5 ft 5 in?+
Because 0.5 ft is half a foot, which is 6 inches, not 5. So 5.5 ft means 5 ft 6 in, or 167.64 cm. Decimal feet and feet + inches are different ways of writing the same length and they do not convert digit by digit.
Is 6 feet the same as 183 cm?+
Almost. 6 ft is exactly 182.88 cm, so 183 cm is the rounded figure most applications would show. If a form needs an exact entry, use 182.88.
Can I enter 12 inches?+
The inches box stops at 11.9 on purpose. Twelve inches is one foot, so add 1 to the feet box and set inches to 0. The calculator will not silently fold 12 inches into a foot for you.
How many cm is 5 feet?+
5 ft is exactly 152.4 cm. It is one of the anchor values worth remembering: 5 ft = 152.4 cm, 6 ft = 182.88 cm.
Should I round my height up or down on a form?+
Use the nearest whole centimetre unless the form asks for one decimal place. 170.18 cm rounds to 170 cm; 170.6 cm would round to 171 cm. Do not round before converting, because that can shift the result by a centimetre.
