The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

Every Indian plot conversation mixes at least two units — gaj in the broker's message, square feet in the builder's plan, square metres on the registry. This converter goes through one base unit, square feet, so the result is consistent whichever pair you pick.

Formula Square feet = area × unit factor · Result = square feet ÷ target unit factor
01

Convert the input to square feet

Multiply by the factor: 1 gaj = 9 sq ft, 1 sq m = 10.7639104 sq ft, 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft, 1 hectare = 107,639.1042 sq ft.

02

Divide by the target factor

To get gaj, divide square feet by 9; for square metres, divide by 10.7639104; for acres, divide by 43,560. The result table shows the same plot in every other unit at once.

03

Check against the registry figure

Sale deeds quote area in the unit used by the local sub-registrar. If your converted figure differs by more than rounding, check whether the deed uses bigha, which varies by state, or a local 'gaj' that is not exactly 9 sq ft.

Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · Gaj

Gaj is just a square yard

One gaj is 9 square feet — a square 3 ft × 3 ft. The word is common in north Indian property deals even though the registry may record square metres.

02 · Acre

An acre is 43,560 sq ft, always

Acre and hectare are fixed international units. A hectare is 10,000 m², which works out to about 2.471 acres — no local variation.

03 · Bigha

Bigha is the unit that breaks calculators

A bigha is not a fixed unit — it is defined locally and differs by state and even by district. This converter does not pretend to convert it; ask the local revenue office or sub-registrar what one bigha equals where the land is.

04 · Registry

Use the unit on your sale deed

Builder brochures often use super built-up area, while the registry records the plot in square metres or gaj. Convert the number that legally describes the land, not the marketing number.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
How many square feet is 100 gaj?+
900 sq ft. One gaj is 9 sq ft, so 100 gaj is 100 × 9 = 900 sq ft, which is about 83.61 m².
How do I convert gaj to square metres?+
Multiply gaj by 0.836127. For example, 200 gaj is 167.23 m². In the calculator, choose gaj as the input and square metres as the output.
How many gaj are in one acre?+
An acre is 43,560 sq ft, and one gaj is 9 sq ft, so an acre is 4,840 gaj. That is 4,046.86 m² or 0.4047 hectare.
Is 1 hectare equal to 2.5 acres?+
Not quite — 1 hectare is 2.47105 acres. A hectare is 10,000 m² and an acre is 4,046.86 m². The converter shows both directions so you can check the figure before quoting it.
Why does my plot area differ from the registry?+
Common reasons are bigha conversion, an old measurement in feet that does not match the new survey, or the difference between plot area and super built-up area. Use the surveyor's or sub-registrar's figure for anything legal.
Can I convert bigha with this calculator?+
No. Bigha has no single national value — it is defined locally and differs by state and district. Ask the local revenue office or sub-registrar what one bigha equals where the land is, then convert that figure.
