The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

Yield is reported per acre or per hectare, but the farmer sells a total. Multiply the two, convert to the unit the buyer uses, and then apply the price.

Formula Total quintals = area × yield per acre · Total kg = quintals × 100 · Value = quintals × price per quintal
01

Multiply area by yield

2.5 acres at 18 quintals an acre is 45 quintals. If your yield figure is per hectare, divide it by 2.471 to get quintals per acre first.

02

Convert to the buyer's unit

45 quintals is 4,500 kg, or 4.5 tonnes. Mandis quote per quintal; traders sometimes quote per tonne, so keep the conversion clear.

03

Apply the price

45 quintals at ₹2,585 a quintal is ₹1,16,325. Change the price input to the MSP for your crop or the rate at your mandi.

Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · The quintal

One quintal is 100 kg

Indian mandis quote most grain per quintal. A 45-quintal crop is 4,500 kg or 4.5 tonnes — the same quantity in different units.

02 · The hectare

Per-hectare and per-acre figures are not interchangeable

A yield of 5 tonnes per hectare is about 2.0 tonnes per acre, because one hectare is 2.471 acres. Mixing the units is the most common error in yield arithmetic.

03 · The price

MSP is a floor, not a market rate

Procurement at MSP depends on the crop, the state and the procurement window. For many crops the mandi rate moves above or below MSP, so value the crop at the price you can actually get.

04 · The gross

Yield value is not profit

The figure here is gross value. Subtract seed, fertilizer, irrigation, labour and harvesting to get the margin — the MSP income calculator does that subtraction.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
How many quintals of wheat does one acre produce?+
It varies widely by variety, irrigation and management. The calculator's 20 quintal/acre default is only an example; use your own field average, or ask your KVK for the district average.
How do I convert quintals to tonnes?+
Divide by 10. A 45-quintal crop is 4.5 tonnes, because one quintal is 100 kg and one tonne is 1,000 kg.
How do I value a crop at MSP?+
Multiply the total quintals by the MSP per quintal. For wheat at ₹2,585 and 45 quintals, the gross value is ₹1,16,325. Replace the price with your crop's MSP from the table.
What is the difference between yield and income?+
Yield is the quantity produced; income is that quantity valued at a price. Two farmers with the same yield can have very different incomes if they sell at different prices.
Should I use MSP or the mandi price?+
Use the rate you can actually realise. MSP applies where procurement happens; elsewhere the mandi rate rules. For a conservative estimate use the lower of the two.
Can I use this calculator for a vegetable crop?+
Yes, if you know the yield per acre in quintals and the price per quintal. Vegetables are often sold per kg or per crate, so convert the price to a per-quintal figure first.
