The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

Seed rate is the weight of seed needed to establish the right plant population on a given area. If the seed lot germinates poorly, the quantity must rise to compensate.

Formula Base seed = area × seed rate · Seed to buy = base seed × 100 ÷ germination %
01

Match the rate to the crop and method

Wheat drilled at 100 kg/ha is about 40.5 kg/acre, while transplanted paddy at 40–50 kg/ha is only 16–20 kg/acre. Broadcasting usually needs more seed than line sowing.

02

Multiply by the area

40.5 kg/acre on 2.5 acres is 101.25 kg. Convert to hectares first if your recommendation is written in kg/ha: 1 hectare is 2.471 acres.

03

Adjust for germination

A lot with 80% germination needs 100 ÷ 80 = 1.25 times the base seed. A 90% lot needs 1.11 times. The calculator does this adjustment and shows the extra seed.

Wheat — seed drill10040.5Rabi crop. Broadcasting wheat needs about 300 kg/ha.
Paddy — transplanting40–5016–2050 kg/ha for thick-grained, 40 for thin-grained varieties.
Paddy — line sowing / direct seeded80–9032–36Broadcast (biasi) paddy uses 100–120 kg/ha.
Maize — normal hybrid17.5–207–8Sweetcorn 7.5–10 kg/ha; baby corn 25 kg/ha.
Bt cotton hybrid2.10.9Only 2.125 kg/ha because of high seed cost and precision sowing.
American cotton varieties15–206–8Open-pollinated varieties need much more seed than hybrids.
Moong (green gram)20–258–10Sow at the onset of the monsoon, 30 × 10 cm spacing.
Bajra41.6Advisory states 1.6 kg/acre at 45 × 15 cm spacing.
Jowar — grain purpose12–155–6Fodder jowar uses a different rate.
Wheat is a rabi crop — its 100 kg/ha rate is the ICAR wheat recommendation for drilling. The kharif rows (paddy, maize, cotton, moong, bajra, jowar) follow the ICAR Kharif Agro-Advisory 2025. Rates vary with variety, spacing and region; 1 hectare = 2.471 acres. Use your state package of practices for the final figure.
Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · The basis

Seed rate is per area, not per plant

Recommendations are written as kg per hectare or per acre because that is what a farmer buys. Plant population and spacing are already built into the rate.

02 · The germination

Poor germination is a hidden cost

Sowing a 70% germination lot at the normal rate leaves gaps in the field. The calculator increases the quantity so the plant stand matches the recommendation.

03 · The unit

1 hectare is 2.471 acres

Most official seed rates are in kg/ha while Indian farmers often buy by the acre. Divide the kg/ha figure by 2.471 to get kg/acre.

04 · The limit

More seed is not more yield

Over-seeding wastes seed and can reduce yield through competition, lodging and disease. Stick close to the recommendation for your variety and spacing.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
How much wheat seed do I need for 1 acre?+
About 40.5 kg with a seed drill at the ICAR rate of 100 kg/ha, because 1 hectare is 2.471 acres. Broadcasting wheat needs much more — around 300 kg/ha, or 121 kg/acre.
Should I increase seed if germination is low?+
Yes. Divide the base seed by the germination fraction: at 80% germination, multiply by 1.25. If the lot is below about 70%, it is usually better to use a better lot than to thicken the sowing.
How do I convert a kg/hectare recommendation to kg/acre?+
Divide by 2.471. For example, 100 kg/ha ÷ 2.471 = 40.5 kg/acre. To go from kg/acre to kg/ha, multiply by 2.471.
How much paddy seed is needed for 1 acre?+
For transplanting, about 16–20 kg/acre (40–50 kg/ha). For direct line sowing it rises to roughly 32–36 kg/acre, and for broadcast sowing to 40–48 kg/acre.
Does spacing change the seed rate?+
Yes. Wider rows or wider plant spacing usually reduce the seed rate for the same area, and closer spacing increases it. The ICAR rates are tied to the recommended spacing for that crop and method.
Is a higher seed rate safer?+
Not always. A modest buffer helps against poor germination, but heavy over-seeding costs money, encourages disease and can lower yield. Adjust for measured germination and keep the rest close to the recommendation.
