The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

An air conditioner's bill is just its input power multiplied by the hours it runs, converted to units. The tonnage tells you the cooling, not the electricity — the wattage does.

Formula Units per day = watts × hours ÷ 1,000 · Units per month = daily units × days used · Cost = units × tariff
01

Find the real input power

The BEE label lists input power in watts. A 1.5-ton 3-star inverter split commonly draws around 1,400–1,700 W at full load; the same AC on a 5-star label is usually lower.

02

Multiply by running hours

1,500 W for 8 hours is 12,000 watt-hours, or 12 units a day. Thirty such days make 360 units a month.

03

Price the units

At ₹8 a unit, 360 units cost ₹2,880 a month. On a slab tariff the same AC can cost much more once it pushes you into a higher slab, which is why your own bill rate matters.

Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · The label

Watts decide the bill, not tons

A 1.5-ton AC can draw 1,100 W or 1,800 W depending on its star rating and technology. The tonnage only says how much heat it removes.

02 · The hours

Every extra hour is linear

Double the running hours and you double the units. Setting a timer for the hours you actually need is the simplest saving there is.

03 · The star

A 5-star AC saves units, not necessarily money upfront

A 5-star model uses roughly 15–25% less electricity than a 3-star model of the same capacity. The higher purchase price only pays back if you run the AC for many hours a year.

04 · The slab

The marginal unit can cost more than the average

If the AC pushes your monthly use into a higher slab, the extra units are billed at the higher rate. Use the marginal rate for a worst-case estimate.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
How many units does a 1.5-ton AC use in 8 hours?+
At a typical 1,500 W input, about 12 units in 8 hours. A 5-star inverter model drawing 1,200 W would use about 9.6 units; a 3-star drawing 1,700 W would use 13.6 units.
How much does it cost to run an AC for one night?+
Eight hours at 1,500 W is 12 units. At ₹8 a unit that is ₹96 a night; at ₹6.50 it is ₹78. The calculator shows the figure for your hours and tariff.
How do I find my AC's wattage?+
Look at the BEE star label or the rating plate on the indoor or outdoor unit. It lists input power in watts (sometimes as a range). Use the cooling-season figure, not the seasonal consumption printed in kWh.
Do inverter ACs use less than the calculator shows?+
Usually yes. An inverter compressor slows down once the room reaches the set temperature, so average draw is lower than the rated input power. This calculator treats the AC as running at its rated input, which makes the result an upper estimate.
Is it cheaper to run the AC at 24°C or 26°C?+
26°C uses less energy than 24°C, because the compressor works less to hold a higher room temperature. The exact saving depends on the model, insulation and outdoor temperature, so measure it with a meter rather than trusting a fixed percentage.
Can rooftop solar cover my AC load?+
Often a large part of it. A 1.5-ton AC running 8 hours uses about 12 units a day; a 3 kW rooftop system generates roughly 10–13 units a day in a good location. The solar panel size calculator works out the kW for your total monthly use.
