How it is calculated
The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is not a flat percentage. It is a fixed amount per kilowatt, and the rate falls after the first 2 kW. After 3 kW the central subsidy stops growing.
Subsidy = min(kW, 2) × ₹30,000 + max(0, min(kW, 3) − 2) × ₹18,000 · Nothing beyond 3 kW
Take the first 2 kW at the top rate
Every eligible residential rooftop system gets ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW. A 1.5 kW system gets ₹45,000; a 2 kW system gets ₹60,000.
Add the third kW at the lower rate
The next 1 kW — from 2 kW to 3 kW — is paid at ₹18,000 per kW. This is why a 2.5 kW system gets ₹60,000 + ₹9,000 = ₹69,000.
Stop at 3 kW
Capacity above 3 kW gets no additional central subsidy, so the maximum is ₹78,000 (₹85,800 in special category states). The calculator still shows your cost for the full system.
PM Surya Ghar subsidy slabs
| Segment or capacity | General states | Special category states | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| First 2 kW | ₹30,000 per kW | ₹33,000 per kW | Paid on the first 2 kW or part thereof. |
| Third kW (2–3 kW) | ₹18,000 per kW | ₹19,800 per kW | Only the capacity between 2 kW and 3 kW. |
| Above 3 kW | No central CFA | No central CFA | Extra capacity is unsubsidised centrally. |
| Maximum for a home | ₹78,000 | ₹85,800 | Cap reached at 3 kW. |
| Group housing / RWA common facilities | ₹18,000 per kW | ₹19,800 per kW | Capped at 3 kW per house. |
| MNRE benchmark cost | ₹50,000/kW first 2, ₹45,000 third | ₹55,000/kW first 2, ₹49,500 third | Tiered benchmark for scheme accounting; the calculator applies one editable rate, not this tiering. |
What most pages get wrong
₹78,000 is the most a home gets centrally
The subsidy reaches its maximum at 3 kW. A 5 kW or 10 kW system still gets only ₹78,000, so the larger system is paid for by you.
The subsidy follows module capacity, not the inverter
A larger inverter does not increase the subsidy. The MNRE guidelines count the rated DC capacity of the modules installed on the roof.
DCR modules are mandatory for the subsidy
Modules must be made in India from Indian cells to qualify for CFA. Non-DCR modules are allowed only under the Give It Up option, where you forgo the subsidy.
Your state may add its own subsidy
Several states top up the central CFA. The extra amount is set by the state and is not part of this calculator's ₹78,000 figure.
