Mileage calculator

Distance divided by litres gives mileage. The calculator also turns that into rupees per km, per 100 km and per month — the number that actually affects your budget.

The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

Mileage is one division. The useful work is measuring it honestly and then converting it into cost per km, because that is the figure that changes with fuel prices.

Formula Mileage = distance ÷ fuel used · Cost per km = fuel price ÷ mileage
01

Fill the tank full and note the odometer

Fill to the automatic cut-off, note the odometer reading, then drive normally. The next time you fill to the same level, note the litres used and the new reading.

02

Divide distance by litres

500 km on 25 litres is 20 km/L. A single reading can be off by 1–2 km/L because of pump cut-off differences, so average three fills.

03

Convert to cost per km

Divide the petrol price by mileage: ₹105 ÷ 20 km/L = ₹5.25 per km. Multiply by 100 for cost per 100 km, and by monthly kilometres for the monthly fuel bill.

Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · Measure it yourself

Brochure mileage is a test-cycle number

ARAI test figures are useful for comparing cars, not for predicting your bill. City traffic, AC use and short trips can cut real mileage by 20–30%.

02 · Cost per km

The rupee figure moves even when mileage does not

A car that returns 18 km/L costs ₹5.83 per km at ₹105 petrol and ₹5.00 per km at ₹90. Mileage is a property of the car; cost per km is a property of the market.

03 · Tank-to-tank

Three fills beat one fill

Pump cut-off and tank venting make a single reading noisy. Average the litres and distance over three full tanks for a figure within 0.5 km/L.

04 · One number for the budget

Monthly kilometres turn mileage into a budget line

At 1,200 km a month and 20 km/L, you buy 60 litres. At ₹105 that is ₹6,300 a month — a figure you can compare directly with a metro card or a cab allowance.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
How do I calculate mileage from distance and fuel?+
Divide the kilometres driven by the litres used. 500 km on 25 litres is 20 km/L. Use a full-tank to full-tank measurement so the starting and ending levels match.
Why is my mileage lower than the brochure figure?+
Test-cycle numbers assume steady speeds and no AC. City traffic, idling, short trips and air conditioning can reduce real mileage by 20–30%. Highway driving at 60–80 km/h usually comes closest to the brochure.
How much does my car cost per km in fuel?+
Divide the petrol price by the mileage. At ₹105 per litre and 18 km/L, fuel costs ₹5.83 per km. The calculator also shows cost per 100 km and the monthly bill for your driving.
Does this calculator work for diesel or CNG?+
The arithmetic is the same — distance divided by fuel used. Enter the diesel or CNG price per litre or per kg in the price field and the cost figures follow. The default is petrol.
Why does my car show a different mileage on the dashboard?+
The dashboard figure is computed by the engine computer from injection data and is usually optimistic. The tank-to-tank method measures fuel actually bought, which is what your wallet experiences.
How can I improve mileage?+
Steady speeds, correct tyre pressure, removing excess weight and avoiding hard acceleration are the reliable levers. AC use and short city trips are the biggest reasons for a low figure.
