The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

There is no single answer to how many litres are in a gallon, because two different gallons are still in use. The calculator makes you choose one and shows both, so you can see how far apart they are.

Formula US gallons = litres ÷ 3.785411784 · imperial gallons = litres ÷ 4.54609
01

Pick the gallon

The US gallon is 3.785411784 L and the imperial gallon is 4.54609 L. US fuel, milk and recipe labels use the US gallon; older UK material uses the imperial one.

02

Divide by the factor

10 litres ÷ 3.785411784 = 2.6417 US gallons. The same 10 litres ÷ 4.54609 = 2.1997 imperial gallons. Both are exact divisions of defined quantities.

03

Keep the labels when you compare

Mileage figures such as mpg are meaningless without the gallon. A car doing 40 mpg US is doing about 48 mpg imperial for the same fuel consumption, because the imperial gallon is bigger.

Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · Two gallons

The imperial gallon is about 20% bigger

One US gallon is 3.785411784 L and one imperial gallon is 4.54609 L. That is a 20.1% difference — large enough that an mpg figure without a country label is ambiguous.

02 · Fuel

India sells fuel in litres, so gallon figures are imported

Indian pumps and vehicle specs use litres. US fuel economy is quoted in miles per US gallon, while older UK figures use the imperial gallon, so convert the gallon before comparing any mpg number.

03 · The litre

A litre is a cubic decimetre

One litre is 1 dm³, or 0.001 m³, and 1,000 ml. That definition is why the litre is the base of everyday volume in India, from water bottles to fuel tanks.

04 · Same number, different volume

A 10-gallon tank is not 10 gallons everywhere

A 10 US gallon tank holds 37.85 L; a 10 imperial gallon tank holds 45.46 L. The number on the label is identical and the volume is not.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
How many litres are in a gallon?+
A US gallon is 3.785411784 L, and an imperial gallon is 4.54609 L. Which one you mean changes the answer by about 20%, so always check the label: US fuel and recipes use the smaller US gallon.
How many gallons is 10 litres?+
10 litres is 2.6417 US gallons or 2.1997 imperial gallons. The calculator shows both figures, so you can use whichever gallon your recipe or spec is written in.
Is an imperial gallon the same as a US gallon?+
No. The imperial gallon is 4.54609 L and the US gallon is 3.785411784 L, so the imperial gallon is about 20% larger. They are both called a gallon, which is why the unit label matters.
Which gallon does mpg use?+
US mpg uses the US gallon; imperial mpg uses the imperial gallon. A car quoted at 40 mpg US is about 48 mpg imperial for the same fuel use. Without the label, two mpg figures cannot be compared.
How do I convert litres to gallons by hand?+
Divide the litres by 3.785411784 for US gallons or by 4.54609 for imperial gallons. A 50-litre tank is 13.21 US gallons or 11.0 imperial gallons.
How many litres is a 20-litre jerry can in gallons?+
20 litres is 5.2834 US gallons or 4.3994 imperial gallons. The chart on this page lists the common container sizes so you do not need to recalculate.
Why is a litre not exactly a quarter of a gallon?+
Because a gallon is not an SI unit and was defined separately. A US gallon is 3.785411784 L, so a quarter of it is 0.946 L, not 1 L. The litre is the exact unit; the gallon is the derived one.
