The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

The mile used on road signs is the international statute mile, fixed in 1959 at exactly 1.609344 km. The conversion is one division, and the same number converts speeds as well as distances.

Formula miles = kilometres ÷ 1.609344 · mph = km/h × 0.6213711922
01

Divide by the exact mile

One international mile is exactly 1.609344 km. So 10 km ÷ 1.609344 = 6.2137 miles, and 5 km is 3.1069 miles — the 5K run distance in miles.

02

The same factor scales speeds

Because both distance and time are linear, a speed in km/h converts with the same factor: 100 km/h × 0.621371 = 62.14 mph. A 50 km/h city limit is 31.07 mph.

03

Do not confuse nautical miles

A nautical mile is 1.852 km, not 1.609 km. It is used in shipping and aviation because one minute of latitude is about one nautical mile. Road distances use the statute mile.

Miles are the exact conversion of the kilometre value; feet are shown to the nearest foot. The nautical mile column is not included here because it uses a different definition — 1 nmi = 1.852 km.
Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · The definition

One mile is exactly 1.609344 km

The international statute mile was fixed at 1,609.344 m in 1959, so converting to miles is a division by 1.609344. The often-quoted 1.6 is a rounded short cut and drifts by 0.6%.

02 · Speed

The same factor converts road speeds

100 km/h is 62.14 mph and 50 km/h is 31.07 mph. Multiply km/h by 0.621371 for mph; multiply mph by 1.609344 for km/h.

03 · Running

A 5K is 3.11 miles, a marathon is 26.22

Races are named in kilometres in India but often described in miles abroad. 5K = 3.1069 mi, 10K = 6.2137 mi, half marathon = 13.1094 mi and a full marathon = 26.2188 mi.

04 · Nautical miles

Ships and aircraft use a longer mile

A nautical mile is 1.852 km, tied to one minute of latitude. It is not the mile on road signs, so a distance in nautical miles should be converted with 1.852, not 1.609.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
How many miles is 5 km?+
5 km is 3.1069 miles. That is why a 5K race is often called a 3.1-mile run. Divide kilometres by 1.609344 for any distance.
How many km is 1 mile?+
1 mile is exactly 1.609344 km. The rounded figure of 1.6 km is fine for a rough estimate but is off by about 0.6%, which adds up over long distances.
What is 10 km in miles?+
10 km is 6.2137 miles. A 10K run is therefore about 6.2 miles, and a 100 km drive is 62.14 miles.
Is a marathon 42 km or 26 miles?+
Both. The marathon is 42.195 km, which is 26.2188 miles — usually shortened to 26.2 miles. The two figures describe the same race distance.
How do I convert km/h to mph?+
Multiply the speed by 0.621371. For example, 100 km/h = 62.14 mph and 120 km/h = 74.56 mph. To go the other way, multiply mph by 1.609344.
What is a nautical mile and is it different?+
A nautical mile is 1.852 km, longer than the 1.609 km statute mile. It is used at sea and in aviation because it corresponds closely to one minute of latitude. Road distances never use it.
Why does India use kilometres?+
India adopted the metric system, so road distances, vehicle odometers and speed limits are in km. The UK and the US still use miles on road signs, which is why the conversion comes up when reading foreign maps or car specs.
