The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

There is no official market price list for solar panels. MNRE does publish a benchmark cost for PM Surya Ghar, which it uses to set the subsidy. This page prices your system at that benchmark (or your own quote), then subtracts the central subsidy.

Formula Benchmark price = min(kW, 2) × ₹50,000 + max(0, kW − 2) × ₹45,000 · Net = price − subsidy (₹30,000/kW first 2 kW + ₹18,000 third kW)
01

Price the first 2 kW

The MNRE benchmark is ₹50,000 per kW for the first 2 kW (₹55,000 in special category states). So 2 kW is ₹1,00,000 at the benchmark.

02

Add each extra kW

Each kW after the second is ₹45,000 (₹49,500 in special category states). A 3 kW system is ₹1,45,000; this page applies the same rate to 5 kW and 10 kW systems.

03

Subtract the central subsidy

₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third, capped at ₹78,000. A 3 kW system at the benchmark costs ₹67,000 after the subsidy.

Benchmark cost and CFA from the MNRE PM Surya Ghar guidelines (effective 13 February 2024; amended 7 July 2025). The guidelines set the benchmark for the first 2 kW and the additional kW only; the 5 kW and 10 kW rows extend ₹45,000 to every kW beyond 3 and are estimates, not official figures. Actual quotes vary by vendor, module type and site.
Before you use it

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · The source

The only official price is the MNRE benchmark

MNRE fixes a benchmark cost per kW to work out the subsidy. Vendors charge a mutually agreed price, and the indicative component costs the guidelines say MNRE will publish (§6(g)) have not been published.

02 · The cap

The subsidy stops growing at 3 kW

The central subsidy peaks at ₹78,000 in general states and ₹85,800 in special category states. Beyond 3 kW it no longer grows, so the price after subsidy climbs at the full per-kW cost.

03 · The condition

DCR modules and a registered vendor

To get the subsidy, modules must meet the Domestic Content Requirement and the vendor must be registered on the PM Surya Ghar portal.

04 · The service

Five years of free maintenance

Registered vendors must repair and maintain the system free for a 5-year Comprehensive Maintenance Contract period from commissioning.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
What is the price of a 1 kW solar panel system?+
At the MNRE benchmark, a 1 kW rooftop system is ₹50,000 (₹55,000 in special category states). After the ₹30,000 central subsidy you pay ₹20,000. Your vendor's quote may differ.
How much does a 3 kW rooftop system cost after subsidy?+
₹67,000 at the benchmark in general states: ₹1,45,000 minus the ₹78,000 subsidy. In special category states it is ₹1,59,500 minus ₹85,800, or ₹73,700.
What does a 5 kW solar system cost for a home?+
About ₹2,35,000 as an estimate: ₹50,000 for each of the first 2 kW, then ₹45,000 for each further kW. The guidelines do not set a rate beyond 3 kW, so the extension is ours. After the ₹78,000 subsidy cap that is about ₹1,57,000 (special category states: cap ₹85,800).
Is a 10 kW system eligible for subsidy?+
Yes, but only up to the cap. A residential 10 kW system still gets ₹78,000 centrally (₹85,800 in special category states); the rest is unsubsidised. Applications up to 10 kW are also deemed accepted without a DISCOM feasibility approval under the consumer rules.
What is included in installation cost?+
MNRE says the benchmark reflects module prices, inverter costs and other system costs. Ask your vendor for an itemised quote. Under the scheme, the vendor must also give you 5 years of free repair and maintenance.
On-grid vs off-grid: which costs less?+
This page prices grid-connected (on-grid) systems, which is what the benchmark covers. Off-grid installations are not eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy at all, so the full price is yours. Batteries are also an extra component outside the benchmark.

Changelog
2026-11-01First published with the MNRE PM Surya Ghar benchmark cost, the CFA slabs and an own-quote option. Fact-check: 5 and 10 kW totals labelled as estimates; special-category ₹85,800 cap stated; noted MNRE has not published §6(g) component costs.
