How it is calculated
The new regime is simple by design: one slab table, one standard deduction and no chapter VI-A deductions. The calculator applies them in the same order as the return.
Taxable income = gross income − Rs 75,000 standard deduction · Slab tax − section 156 rebate + surcharge + 4% cess = tax
Find taxable income
Salary plus other income, minus the Rs 75,000 standard deduction for salaried taxpayers. The new regime does not allow 80C, 80D, HRA or home-loan interest deductions.
Apply the new-regime slabs
The first Rs 4,00,000 is nil, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% across the bands up to above Rs 24,00,000. The reference table shows every band.
Rebate, surcharge, cess
If taxable income is up to Rs 12,00,000, section 156 wipes out the slab tax (up to Rs 60,000). Above Rs 50,00,000 surcharge applies, and 4% health and education cess is added last.

What most pages get wrong
Rs 12.75 lakh salary can mean zero tax
The Rs 75,000 standard deduction plus the section 156 rebate means a salaried person with Rs 12,75,000 of salary income can have no tax liability under the new regime.
A small raise above Rs 12 lakh does not cost you the full rebate
Marginal relief under section 156(2)(b) caps the tax just above Rs 12,00,000 at the amount by which income exceeds that line, until the normal slab tax becomes lower.
Surcharge starts at Rs 50 lakh and tops out at 25%
The new regime caps surcharge at 25% for income above Rs 2 crore. Marginal relief applies at each surcharge threshold, and 4% cess is charged on tax plus surcharge.
No 80C, no HRA, no home-loan interest
The new regime is the default. Most deductions are gone, so the only common reductions are the standard deduction and employer NPS contributions under 80CCD(2).
