How it is calculated
Pension is a percentage of the basic pay you retired on, not of your gross salary. Qualifying service sets the percentage, then DR and the pension floor and ceiling adjust the amount.
Basic pension = 50% of basic pay for 20+ years · (basic pay ÷ 2) × (years ÷ 20) for 10–20 years · minimum Rs 9,000; maximum Rs 1,25,000
Take the basic pay
Use the basic pay drawn on retirement, or the average of the last 10 months if that is more beneficial. DA and allowances are not part of the pension base; they come later as DR.
Apply the service rule
At 20 years or more, pension is 50% of basic pay. Between 10 and 20 years it is pro-rata: half the basic pay multiplied by years divided by 20. Less than 10 years is a service gratuity, not a pension.
Add DR and estimate gratuity
Dearness relief is the DA rate applied to pension and is revised twice a year. Retirement gratuity is a separate lump sum: 1/4 month of basic + DA for each six-month period, capped at Rs 20 lakh.

What most pages get wrong
20 years of service is the full-pension line
At 20 or more years of qualifying service, pension is 50% of basic pay. Below that, it is reduced pro-rata — 15 years gives 37.5%.
No pension below Rs 9,000 a month
The 7th CPC set a minimum pension of Rs 9,000 and a maximum of Rs 1,25,000. The calculator applies both after the formula.
DR is paid at the same rate as DA
Dearness relief on pension tracks the DA rate for serving employees: 63% from 1 July 2026. It is paid on the basic pension, not on gratuity.
Retirement gratuity can add up to Rs 20 lakh
Gratuity is 1/4 month of basic + DA for each completed six-month period, capped at Rs 20,00,000. It is a one-time payment and does not reduce the monthly pension.
