The method

How it is calculated

The formula this page actually runs

DA arrears are the difference between the old and new dearness allowance for the months that were paid at the old rate. It is basic pay multiplied by the percentage increase and the number of months.

Formula Arrears = basic pay × (new DA% − old DA%) ÷ 100 × months
01

Find the DA increase

Subtract the old DA rate from the new one. The July 2026 revision moved DA from 60% to 63%, a 3 percentage point increase.

02

Apply it to basic pay

Three percent of Rs 44,900 basic pay is Rs 1,347 per month. DA is calculated on basic pay, not on the full gross salary.

03

Multiply by the months

The revision is effective from 1 July 2026. July–October 2026 were paid at 60%, so 4 months of arrears are due. Four months of Rs 1,347 is Rs 5,388.

What most pages get wrong

4 things worth knowing before you use the number
01 · The base

DA is paid on basic pay, not gross salary

A 3% DA increase on Rs 44,900 basic pay adds Rs 1,347 per month. On the gross salary the cash amount would look different, but the rule uses basic pay.

02 · Two revisions

DA changes every January and July

Each order applies from 1 January or 1 July, but the announcement can come months later. That gap is why arrears accumulate.

03 · Arrears timing

The revision date is not the payment date

The July 2026 hike was approved in October 2026 but is effective from 1 July 2026, so pensioners and employees receive the backlog with a later salary or pension payment.

04 · TA also rises

Transport allowance gets DA too

DA is paid on transport allowance as well, so the total arrears shown on a pay slip can be slightly higher than the basic-pay-only estimate here.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The queries people actually search
How are DA arrears calculated?+
Multiply basic pay by the increase in the DA rate and by the number of months. A 3% increase on Rs 44,900 basic pay is Rs 1,347 per month, or Rs 5,388 for the four months July–October 2026.
What is the DA rate from July 2026?+
63% of basic pay. The Cabinet approved a 3 percentage point increase from 60% on 28 October 2026, effective from 1 July 2026.
When will I receive the arrears?+
The Department of Expenditure order (OM No. 1/2(i)/2026-E.II(B), 29 October 2026) covers civilian central government employees. Arrears are usually paid with a later month's salary once the order is implemented; check your pay slip or your department.
Does DA arrears apply to pensioners?+
Yes, as dearness relief (DR). The rate is the same as DA, and the arrears calculation is the same: pension × increase in rate × months.
Is DA arrears taxable?+
DA forming part of salary is taxable for private-sector employees. For central government employees, DA is part of salary for tax purposes; the arrears are taxed with the salary of the year in which they are paid, subject to the usual rules.
Why does my pay slip show more arrears than this?+
This calculator applies the increase to basic pay only. Transport allowance and other DA-linked allowances also rise, and pay fixation or promotion changes can add more. Compare the DA line on your pay slip.
